Syncro System Movement

artist:  Sunny Ade and his African Beats
album: Syncro System Movement
label: African Songs LTD
year: 1974

Listen, this is some serious introspective business.

This album here, Syncro System Movement, is the first African album I ever bought.

And to this day it remains one of my favorite pieces of vinyl in any genre.

Does it remain one of my favorites just because it was my first?

The first cut is the deepest as they say.

Or does it remain one of my favorites because it is a great album.

Either way.

Let me tell you how I found it.

In the 1980's I lived one block from Rhino records.  A record collectors dream if I do say so.

Every night after work I used to stop by Rhino to check out what they had gotten in.

In those days Rhino had tons of used vinyl and they had a listening booth so you could check out the records.  It was wonderful.  I used to wander into Rhino half blazing on ganja and liquor and spend hours listening to music.

(More on that here here )

I was, and still am, heavily into reggae music so every night I would check out the used reggae bin.  Oh lord, if I could only be back there now.  What treasures I found in that used reggae bin.

Now as it was set up Rhino didn't have a used African bin.   So on the occasions when they got in a used African record they used to put it in the bin with the used Reggae.

And that, dear reader, is how I got my hands on this record.

I think I had heard of Sunny Ade but I certainly didn't know his music.  But this record looked interesting, so I gave it a spin.

"Syncro... Syncro system..."

I rapidly became a Juju fan.  From that day forward, every night as I combed through the reggae records, I kept my eyes open for Juju music.  With time I found more Sunny Ade records and I was introduced to Ebenezer Obey and Prince Adekunle...

But this first Sunny Ade record...

Syncro System Movement.

It's still my favorite.

Excuse me while I give it a play....

"I have my own style of playing the guitar. I have my special line. If I place my guitar here and if you are a guitarist, you can’t play it because of the way I tuned it. You have to study it to be able to play it. I have my own special line of guitar. I have my own creation of guitar. That was why some years ago I was recognised as number 68 master guitarist in the whole world." - KSA (more here: http://www.sekowale.com/interview-king-sunny-ade-nigerias-music-industry-needs-surgery/)

"This is my favourite Sunny Ade album of all times, I play it frequently, IMHO the Nuances of the bands guitar playing is something else, restrained, tonal, & with a fantastic timbre. Side a of the album has a rather pensive mood, I wonder who Sunny was referring to in 'Asa nke - okete bayi niwa e' ? More significantly this album marks a significant chapter in the history of Nigeria post 15th Jan 1966. Nice one Groovy, time to fill my glass with another dram of my favourite single malt whiskey..."

outreachat said... "Noticed the pent-up energy in the guitar sequence starting from 2:55? Sunny Ade was brimming with energy from a year of live music in the United States, from 1974 to '75. The ban that led to that had just expired in 1975, and he had come out with an album. Then Gen. Murtala Muhammed was killed, and the Side A of this album, which is traditionally the fireworks page in Nigerian music, had to be solemn; so Sunny just let loose on the flip side! 3:43-6:09 is one of his best efforts on the guitar!"

Sunny Ade and His African Beats

Sunny Ade and His African Beats

Vol 8: Late Pa Yohanna Gowon

African Songs 4L

side one: Isele Yi Le Ju / Asanlamu-Alaikun

King Sunny Ade - "I started with percussion. At the age of seven, I would like to follow my mother to church and they had some percussion there where they would play traditional music. I always liked to be in between those people playing percussion. From there, I started touching the drums. My mother and family didn't want me to do that though. Occassionally, I would go there and I was very small among the percussionists there. So what I do was I would make sure some people would be covering me so when my mother would look back, I would try to dogde her. One person would be in front of me like a human shield. My father was a real slow, careful man, doing everything in a deliberate way, even moving a chair. But that didn't go with the kind of music I wanted to play - I wanted people to SWEAT. When he died, only my mother could stop me. So I would explain to her, 'this is the world that I want to chose. Let me go.'" -(taken from KSA's interview with Jason Gross, june 1998)

If anyone has the files for side two of this record or for the album cover they would be greatly appreciated. I can always be reached at my youtube channel.

Special thank you to everyone for visiting this blog. Thank you and cheers from Miami, USA.

Outreachat said... "This was the first juju album to use the Hawaiian guitar. Its effect was so spell-binding I still recall being a part of crowds on a Lagos street September 1977 listening in wonder to Sunny's latest innovation: it was unlike anything he had ever attempted. The long steel guitar solo 10:11ff is a rendering of a folk song by the twins, The Lijadu Sisters, "Iya O, Ololufe Mi" (My Mother, My Lover), but Sunny's guitar takes it right into the spheres!"

He never returned to the concept, even though the formula behind his entire career was to make a pilot concept album and spin off upwards of four to five derivations from it: an idea, and then up to two years of between three to four albums turning it around here and there. This album came immediately after the "Golden Mercury of Africa" album, and effectively did in Dele Ojo's fine attempt at a comeback in for good."
