Admiral Dele Abiodun speaking with Anthonia Soyingbe (2010)

Abiodun:  "I schooled at Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. My father was my headmaster, a teacher of teachers."

Soyingbe: "You hardly find teacher's offspring in the entertainment industry.. What was his reaction when you were taking this line of career?"

Abiodun: "When you wake up one day as a member of a School Band and as a young man, people tell you that you can do music in Ghana, because Ghana then was in vogue, it became a great challenge. There was no encouragement from anybody and I was scared to tell my father. One day after collecting my school fees, I decided that I would abscond to Ghana to pursue my musical career without the knowledge of anyone. I was given money to pay my fees, but on getting to the bursar's office, there were too many people on the queue. I just decided to go to Ghana without the knowledge of anybody. On getting to Ghana, I enrolled and my people were looking for me. Upon the completion of my programme in Ghana, I was in Lagos and they were still looking for me, but some people saw me and told my father that they saw me, though didn't believe that I had gone into music. As the first son, I knew my father would be so worried. Although I knew my actions was bad, I was determined not to go home until I was fully established in music. The first time they saw me was on television when I was interviewed by Dare Art Alade's father on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), when I came first in a programme called Talent Hunt."

"Another magazine published something on me and my father couldn't believe it, because someone took the magazine to my father. Yet he didn't believe it was I. One day I went for a show in Benin and there my father came, sitting at a corner. Later someone walked up to me on stage and said that my father wanted to see me. I was really terrified, but I summoned the courage and went down to him. After prostrating, he asked me if I was his son. He went further to ask me if I was Cyril, my baptismal name, and I said yes. He asked me to go back on stage and report back to him after the performance, I did. He asked me if I had chosen music as a career and he gave me his blessings. That settled the case."  Daily Independent (Lagos, Nigeria) 2010

"When the Lagos party people, especially the Yoruba elite, gets into a marathon 'til dawn jam-down, more often than not they choose the slinky, mesmerizing Afro-funk of juju for their party's soundtrack. A sea of undulating bodies rising and falling to the endless rhythm, swirls in front of a juju band's silvery, ringing guitars, murmuring electric bass and thundering talking drums. Airy lush harmonies, supercharged by a brassy tenor, hang like clouds over all. And the band plays on for six, seven, eight hours with hardly a break." - from the back cover (1985).

"Admiral" Dele Abiodun has had a steady music career of approximately 20 years. As a singer, composer and guitarist, Abiodun is considered to be one of the best juju musicians. He started his music career at a young age, dropping out of school and moving to Ghana to study music and to find a job. In Ghana he played the bass for several different highlife bands, but in 1969 he decided to go out on his own and he formed his own band called Sweet Abby and the Tophitters. The year following the formation of the band, Abiodun created a new style and used that in many of his performances. The new style of music that was created is known as Adawa, which in translation means Independent Being. After the introduction of the Adawa style, Abiodun and his band released several LPs and singles. In 1981 Abiodun released the hit album Beginning of a New Era and in 1983 he released another hit album titled Ma Se'Ke. In more recent times, Abiodun and his band have released two albums almost back to back. In 1985 they released Confrontation, which is a mini-LP, and in 1986 they released Oro Ayo in Nigeria. - www.artistdirect.com

kkk046 said... Dele Abiodun for most of his musical career remained an ally of Sunny Ade against the ever-present antagonist such as Emperor Pick Peter.  His strength lies in his indepth use of street-wise proverbs, most times with caustic taste against his enemies.  Strange enough, he came from a part of Edo-state where Yoruba is not spoken. Yet, he is able to carve a niche for himself in the pantheon of Yoruba Juju hierarchy.
