Taken from Nigerians In America (NIA):

My love for Adeolu Akinsanya

At the time Obey commenced his musical career, the reigning genre was the highlife. Why then did he opt for juju music? “What we had at that time were the highlife, juju and mambo orchestra. That was the music of Adeolu Akinsanya."  Mambo Orchestra? You'd always thought Adeolu Akinsanya sang highlife. “That was the second leg of his music,” Obey corrects you, smiling. “We had the highlife, we had the mambo orchestra, we had the kokoma and we had the juju. But at that time, I was much in love with Adeolu Akinsanya’s music. The way he composed his songs was simply incredible. Have you heard the song, Opa ebiti to wolo laguda?” The song sounds strange. So the minister takes a quick trip back to his singing days and sings the song. “I think I heard it before on OGBC 2,” you say without conviction, eyeing Ekisola. “No, I don’t think they had that song,” Obey says. “I don’t think we did,” agrees Ekisola. Then the man of God continues. “That was one song that arrested me. The way he composed that song was something else. I fell in love with Adeolu Akinsanya’s songs. Those were the days of the gramophone, and people did not play those records all the time. But whenever I heard the music of Adeolu Akinsanya, I found myself drawn to the music. I knew virtually all his songs by heart. As soon as I heard his song once, that was it. I later got very close to Adeolu Akinsanya. So I started singing like him. That continued until I started my first band between 1954 and 1955.... more here: http://www.nigeriansinamerica.com/ebenezer-obey-i-had-my-share-of-drinking-and-womanizing/

Ebenezer Obey - Immortal Songs for Travelers

In the late 70's Ebenezer Obey and his band were on a roll.  Toshiya Endo's discography lists 22 albums to their credit during the years 1975 to 1980.  And they were all great.  No small feat!  This record comes to us from 1977.  Enjoy.

I am just amazed that he has insisted for over three decades that he recorded the album without any prior rehearsals and in one single take. It may sound thin now in the face of new technology, but the music is still clearly one of Obey's finest; and his hand is steady all through, too. You will not find such evenness in Sunny Ade until Suku suku bam bam, 1976; coming of age came for both at different times!"

Apologies to everyone. I haven't been able to post much recently due to real world work overload. Which is great, according to my landlord, but sometimes I wonder. In any case, when I saw Moos post this album I new I had to include it here. I'll go back to work tomorrow.

Chief Ebenezer Obey, no place like home for real...... I'll surely go back home-may God help us all in the west to have this goal accomplished. "Ilu eni ni ilu eni""

geo93jat said... "I remember when the record came out, he was mimicking Tunde Nightingale in style because Tunde Nightingale was very popular in Lagos then. The bass gutarist, Gabriel Ayodele remained with Obey till the end. You can hear him in the backgroud, he started to end Obey's rhythm solo with distinct rude and rough interlude that compliments Obey's unique style of juju music. Arigidi supports Obey's voice with the ultra tenor voice in the backgound. Enjoy a great sound."

Probably not the right album cover. I've been playing this selection all morning long while I've sipped my coffee. Juju music with Espresso coffee. Nice.

Recorded in 1975, "Ota Mi Dehin Lehin Mi."   Strangers in the Night never sounded so good.

If anyone has the files for side two it would certainly be appreciated by all.

Ebenezer Obey speaking during his interview with Tunde Akingbade (2008)

"... the inspiration that made my work, every release, behind every work that I made to be devoted to God and philosophical lyrics - the secret is, I believe, it was my mother's influence. And what is this? My mother was a believer.

The circumstances that surrounded the life of my mother made her to be a good believer. My mother after spending several years with her first husband, there was no issue. That marriage was not blessed with children. And the parents of that man looked at the marriage of so many years, I think it was almost 20 years - definitely over 19 years.

The influence of parents in those days was great. They spoke to the man, 'you cannot continue like this.' So, they had a family meeting and called my own mother's relations and that man's parents. They said: 'We love this woman, but just look at it. After these years, is it not good for them to separate because the doctors have told this woman, that she would not be able to have a child?' So, it was a big blow. It was a shocker to my mother.

That was in Lagos. The man was a senior station master with the Railways. You know we used to have SM, that is station master. The man was a senior station master, SSM, a big post. The incident was a shocker and a blow to my mother. That was how my mother's brothers took her to Idogo. They were in Idogo because of the cocoa production business they were involved in. You know the Egbado, now Yewa area was noted for cocoa production.

My father actually went to Idogo to be a cocoa farmer and, at the same time, he was a carpenter. So, my father was a friend to my mother's elder brother who came to Lagos to bring her to Idogo to hide her face from shame. But the man of God who prayed for my mother said, “The grace of God is sufficient for you” despite the fact that the doctors said she could not have a baby. The man of God said that the grace of that God covers everything and can do anything in the life of a person.

Grace is a five-letter word. This is the month of May - the fifth month. So, grace in my own life is so important. That man did not just say those things to my mother. It was the Holy Spirit that guided him to say those words. And that became a factor. My mother leaned upon that word of the man, that word that said, 'The grace of God is sufficient for you!'

And the man told my mother she should be praying and saying, 'God, your grace is sufficient for me despite all that the doctors have said.' So, my mother became a believer, a strong believer that she held on to that word, 'God your grace is sufficient for me.' So my mother was doing everything, praying. And when she got to Idogo, even though the doctors said she could not bear a baby, she became pregnant with my sister. Truly, the grace of God was sufficient for her. Before she knew it again, she became pregnant and had me. And my mother told me that when my father called her, 'what are we going to name this boy?', she told my father, 'Ebenezer! Hitherto, the Lord had helped us!' which in Yoruba we say, 'Nihin Ni Oluwa Ran mi Lowo De!'" - Ebenezer Obey (2008)

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Outreachat said... "This is almost surely my all-time Obey album; I like the energy, his reprise of his old story-telling mode which Obey had favoured in the early 70s, and above all, the fusion of content and form in the brilliant drum sequences. The tenor guitarist on this album, Paul Tao, was the third major one to play with Obey, after Monday John and Segun Awe. 1987 was a huge year for Obey, being the only year he posed any credible threat to Sunny Ade's dominance in juju music since the 70s."

geo93kat said: Monday John grew up in Lagos improved Obey's rhythm when everyone was saying Obey's music was boring. Don't forget Alagba Vasco Dagama Adio from Owu in Abeokuta, he is the one with all the bongo drumming that he did with many straw sticks that goes continously on in the background of this sound and many of obey's music and also Mutiu Kekere playing the talking drum added another dimension to Obey's music.

The strong rhythm very dominant and louder than the rest was Obey himself, the thin wailing sound was accompanying guitar by Monday John. Most people did not know Obey was a very skilled guitarist himself. I had the pleasure of seeing them played and practiced. We should also compliment Mathew Baba l'egba on the bass drum, he comes out across very regular. Arigid and Oke Aminu contributed tenor and octave vocals both sat on each side of Commander. Gabriel Adedeji was on bass guitar.
