From the back cover

"THE UBULU PROGRESSION

The musician is Augustine Ojinji. Love A.U. is the popular name in social and music circles. He has been on the music scene for barely two decades. Yet, his impact has been profound.

According to Love A.U. himself, he first became associated with music only as local agent to record stores. He then took to music merely as a hobby and somewhat lackadaisically as a professional."

Seems he stepped up his game a bit...

Henry udoka says... i love Ubulu till death, all your album are inspirational, your death brings me heart break, i depended on you for advice, the little i was able to capture before your departure is not enough. RIP my dear UBULU, I'm Henry Malaysia.

Vincent Damilola says... Although, I am Yoruba,I have this to say that King Ubulu will forever be missed in the land. He is a distinguished musician.A man with a humble beginning in possession of such a voice that appeals to human spirit. Captain Akintayo.

grooVemonzter says... King Ubulu plays beautiful music. King Ubulu's music flows like water. Very nice.

Sato Sato says... Great u ar love A u rest in peace

King Ubulu - Njor Te Eka

The above album cover is one of those album covers that I dream of stumbling upon at a yard sale.  My hands are shaking and my voice is trembling when I ask the owner, "How much do you want for this record....?"

The above album cover is lovely, but it's not the right album cover.  At least not for this song.  At least I don't think it is.  I ran across this picture at popsike so it's all a dream.  An illusion.  According to popsike the above record sold for $52 USD.  52 bucks!  Hey, Mister, do you have a second one for sell?

I love the music of Chief Augustine Ojinji a.k.a. King Ubulu.

"Okumono Use"

1988

"Chief Augustine Ojinji, better known to Nigerian music fans as "King Ubulu" and "Love A.U.," breathed his last in late 2004.

King Ubulu was born in 1949 in Amorji-Onicha in present-day Ndokwa Local Government Area, Delta State. Along with his fellow Ndokwa indigenes Charles Iwegbue and Rogana Ottah
, he did much to advance the cause of Anioma (Western Igbo) highlife in the Nigerian music scene. His generosity was such that he was given the honorifics Ochiligwe ("Majority Leader"), Elishi Egwu ("Music Leader") and Ofodile ("Mighty").

Ubulu trained as a shoemaker, but soon opened a record store in Amorji. Because of his skill with the traditional repertoire, he was often asked to sing at funerals, naming ceremonies and other important occasions. Together with Agu Risky and a number of other musicians, he formed the Ubulu International Band in the early 1970s. The group's first LP, Ukwuani Special, was released in 1976 to wide acclaim, followed by a number of other releases.

In 1983 the Ubulu International Band of Nigeria recruited the late Charlie Boogie of Cameroun, who brought much animation to the group's stage show with his penchant for playing guitar and keyboards with his teeth.

In the 1986 album Onyebu Uwa Nishi, Ubulu warned against those who would try to copy his musical technique, as it came from water (presumably it was as transparent, flowing and natural as that substance)." - John Beadle (http://likembe.blogspot.com/)

grooVemonzer said... I love King Ubulu's music. The guitar playing is sublime IMHO. Hopefully more of his music will appear on the blogs. This song was posted by John on his Likembe blog (link below). According to John, "Ogom Egbu Madu" means "My favor to you should not kill me." Sounds reasonable to me..

November 2010

Greetings from Los Angeles. Journey complete. Miami to Los Angeles. I spent a leisurely six weeks on the road camping out in New Mexico and Arizona. I didn't spend a dime on hotel rooms sleeping out under the desert stars and needless to say it was beautiful. We live in a beautiful world my friends.

When I arrived in Los Angeles I took this picture. I almost had to laugh.
